The Royal City of Loches
Loches has 1,000 years of history and a remarkably well-preserved medieval and Renaissance heritage. The Royal City comprises two major monuments: the royal dwelling and the keep. Come and visit!
The royal residence and its elegant turrets dominate the old town. It was built between the end of the 14th century and the end of the 15th century. Part of the building is in the flamboyant Gothic style. It is associated with three female figures who left their mark on French history: Joan of Arc, Agnès Sorel and Anne of Brittany. Find out more about their lives and the origins of the site by visiting the interior of the dwelling. Don't miss the flamboyant Gothic oratory added at the request of Anne of Brittany.
At 36 metres high, the keep is the other iconic feature of the Lochois landscape. It was built between 1013 and 1035 by the Count of Anjou. Today, it is one of the best-preserved Romanesque keeps in Europe. Originally a defensive site, it was transformed into a royal prison by King Louis XI in the 15th century, then into a departmental prison between 1801 and 1926. The tour is fun and interactive.
